Jay's Still Lame...

I thought Jay was sound, because he has been looking good in the pasture. Specifically last Wednesday the BO put another mare and gelding pony in the pasture with Jay and Jay's gelding buddy, and the pony decided that Jay should not go anywhere NEAR "his" mare. The pony became a screaming whirling dervish, LOL, and didn't make much if any contact with Jay, but he got the message across. The BO's asked me that night if I picked Jay because of his beautiful movement at the trot, because he was just lovely, so I know he wasn't lame because they definitely would have noticed.

Friday night I tacked Jay up planning to lunge him just a bit to make sure he was listening to me, and then get on for a little bit and walk around. I started off trotting him to the right...and he was still lame on the RF, about a 3 out of 5! I was so discouraged. I didn't get a reaction to hoof testers.

Yesterday DH and I pulled up to find Jay playing in the pasture. He looked good and looked pretty sound at liberty. He was DEFINITELY feeling good! I put him in the round pen, and his lameness was a grade better than Friday.

After thinking it over and talking to the BO (who was at the farriers meeting and also saw how bruised Jay's RF foot was), I think he is just still sore from the extensive bruising. I hope that is all it is. Jingles for Jay will be much appreciated!

Oh, no! Im sorry. It sounds like he is feeling a little better though. He seems to be ok in the pasture. Maybe he'll improve in the next week and youll be able to ride.

Ugh, come on, Jay! Hopefully it's just the extra stress of circling? Have you tried jogging him in hand in a straight line and seeing how he does? Or if the footing is different in the round pen (deeper) try lunging him on a line in the pasture?

At least he's still improving! Foot issues are the worst.

My farrier had mentioned putting a rim pad on since he was so bruised - maybe that would help?

When is your next farrier appt?

Gabby, I think a rim pad might have been a really good idea. Was your farrier there that night?

When we drove up on Saturday Jay was playing in the pasture, and looked sound trotting. I put him back in the round pen and he was a grade better, but not totally sound.

Monday, I found him lame on the LEFT front with a big hard lump that looked like a low splint! Grrr...we think he did it pawing at the gate when his buddy was taken out to eat. Thankfully after wrapping, bute, and 24 hours of stall rest he looked OK, so he is back out now. The BO said he was sound when he checked him for me Tuesday night, and he called me yesterday and said Jay was still looking good. I hope things continue to improve/go well! Sheesh!

Oh NO! Can he not keep himself out of trouble?!? Silly boy...

Yep - my farrier was there.

Oh, but I have been reading up on pads/shoes (man, I'm a dork) and I think adding an extra item, such as a pad, to the already difficult to keep on shoe could also exacerbate the problem.

I saw a video that said you should attach the pad to the shoe (geez, i wish I could remember how they said to do that, and nail the shoe on as usual. That way the pad/shoe move more as one.

Maybe he'll get all his lameness out at once and be sound for the rest of his life after this? He seems to be using up more than his allotted number of sick days!

On a happy note, I think I've got a horse to ride, at least for August! :) Her owner's going to be busy for a lot of the month and wants to make sure she stays in regular work. If it works out I'll be able to help with keeping the blog lively!

Gabby, I would like to have met your farrier...I didn't realize he was there. I met his wife at the Barn Yard Sale, she is really nice.

True about the pads, even a rim pad would add more to grab and yank off. I think Jay is proving himself to be rather accident prone!

Andrea, think it will work if I tell him he has used up all of his sick days, LOL? I hope your August ride works out! If so you know we want details! (And pictures!)

I know Kate has been busy...does anyone know if she is going to rejoin us and update us?

I emailed her on Wed and she said she'd be back eventually with updates! Hopefully she'll have time to stop by the blog this weekend with pictures of Pro in his fancy new locale.

Ha - Jay's PTO has run out. He's on unpaid leave of absence, now!

Andrea- good deal about the horse! We need to hear all about him!

Christie - I've never met Scott's wife...but he's super nice, so I'd guess she would be, too! He was the middle aged red headed guy I was talking to at the meeting.

LOL Gabby, I'll tell him THAT is why he is only getting 1/2 scoop of grain 1 time a day now!

As of today Jay has been moved to the DIET paddock! I guess I will tell him that if he wants to EAT, he had better get his act together and go back to WORK!

Haha, very nice! It also sounds like the diet paddock will have less space so he won't have as much of a chance to be stupid and hurt himself? Hopefully he's not one of those that actually gets stupider in small turnout!
