If you havent guessed my name by now, its Laura ! (aka Lauralind NCHN) I am owned by a 18 year old (gosh when did THAT happen !) QH named Cowboy. We basically do mild to moderate (no adrenalin junkie here !) trail riding and some very basic dressage with a natural horsemanship slant. It's pretty interesting at times, at others, its boring.
Cowboy seems to like to test me in the ring and that makes for some tense moments so it makes me not do it as often as it should. I think thats my biggest issue, is making myself do something with him that may not be necessarily FUN but I know in the end it will translate to better communication?

You can do it! Working through your "tests" in the ring will, IMO, lead to better communication and a deeper relationship in all of your work. You can do it! Hang in there!
Welcome, Laura!! Cowboy sounds great (and he's a real cutie). I'm interested about your NH approach to dressage. You'll have to elaborate more in future posts. :)
It sounds like y'all have a good partnership.
You could try to set up the ring like a trail ride he wouldn't feel the need to test you.
I'm interested to hear what kind of NH you use and how you incorporate it into dressage too!
Btw, if you'd like a comparison between Cowboy and another horse who likes to test, you can come out and ride Pepsi some time. (evil grin) Did Karen tell you what an absolute ASS he was being the day she came out? Thankfully, we've worked through most of those issues!
