Dangit, I went out to the pasture (the farthest corner, of course) to grab Skate to go for a ride and was really annoyed to find him lame on his right hind. It's hugely swollen from below the hock to above the fetlock. He has two obvious injuries in that area, but both of them have been there for a week or more. I am praying its not something major. Two other horses recently developed cellulitis in the barn this weekend - odd, I've never actually seen multiple cases of cellulitis at once!
I did the usual cold-hosing and poultice with wrapping and he got some banamine for pain...now he's stall-bound until the swelling goes down. I'm hoping the barn owner will call me today and say it looks better. I hate keeping him inside, but if its a soft-tissue injury, he certainly doesn't need to be running around on it. If he doesn't seem better today, we'll have the vet out.
He is terrible about getting beat-up in the pasture, although I suspect he does it to himself! The BO said she saw him out there one morning standing outside the run-in just kicking away. Moron. Why would he be kicking the run-in??

Ooh, that sucks. Never underestimate the stupidity of horses. I had one that semi-regularly ran head-on into trees while playing with his buddies in the field.
Oh no! I hope he is OK soon, and that it is nothing serious! Please keep us updated!
I must say, my BO is fabulous. She comes running when I call to say his leg looks like a post and is the first to cold hose, wrap, medicate, etc...all for free. She charges nothing for using her meds or anything. It is over and above expectations, really.
Anyone have any ideas on how to say thanks? Of course I said thanks verbally...but I want to really say thanks. Gift Cert to her and her hubby's fav. restaurant? Fruit basket?
I'm sorry...I know you're upset that Skate is hurt but I just cracked up when I pictured him standing there kicking the run-in repeatedly. What was he thinking?
Maybe a good way to "repay" her would be to offer to take over feeding/chores for a night, maybe so she and her husband could take a night off for a date or something. :)
Keep us updated on Skate!
Your BO does sound pretty phenomenal! I think a gift certificate to a favorite restaurant sounds nice! Or if you really want to go all out, combine it with Kate's suggestion of feeding so she and her hubby can have a nice night out!
oh, man, I hope he is ok. Keep us posted.
Oh no! I am sorry to hear about his leg, I can sympathize.
I think a nice dinner gift certificate or chores would be nice.
