I took Deuce back to the vet, and when we got him on a flat, level surface and viewed his back from above and behind, he is not symmetrical from his left side to his right side. The right side of his back looks atrophied. He also is resistant to flexing his head around to the right. Five days of stall rest with 2 grams of Bute twice a day did help some. He was able to tolerate flexing his head around to the right more, and his back was less painful. From there, he was turned back out and kept on 1 gram of Bute twice a day. He became more painful again. Next, he was put on stall rest without Bute. He remained painful. He has been back on turnout without Bute since the middle of last week. Sunday, his back was still painful, but I could pull his legs forward further, especially the right front, without him pulling back.
My vet had been in contact with both Va Tech and NCSU-CVM. Deuce will need to go to one of the vet schools for x-rays of his neck and withers. We are wondering if Deuce had a wreck as a baby that is just now showing up. Do any of you have any ideas? Whatever the problem is, Deuce is in pain continuously. He is not really showing any neurological problems, either. That is placing something like
EPM further down the list of possibilities. Also, does anyone have an opinion of VA Tech versus NCSU? My only experience is, of course, with NCSU. I was thinking about trying to wait until a clinician I know is on clinics there. This could very well be a career ending problem for Deuce, which is why I have been so bummed! This is my favorite time of year to ride, too. So I have been keeping my eyes open for something to ride. Early last week I went to check out a mule that I could free lease. She was very pleasant to ride, and would be something that I could trail ride.

Then I saw a horse posted in the "Giveaways" forum on COTH the middle of last week. She is a 16.2 hand 7yo OTTB mare, and she has done some eventing. I went to look at her Sunday. Another family came to look at her as well, though, so I was doing a really good job of not getting my hopes up...until I rode her! I REALLY liked her. She was willing to come into a nice frame for me, and was very nice to ride. It was evident how much I need to get back in shape, but she was responsive and soft. After cantering some, I was able to get a really nice forward trot with her pushing deep from behind and coming nicely onto the bit. I just couldn't sustain it for very long right now!

The owner went to check out the facility of the other people that afternoon, and I was expecting to be told that they would be getting Magic, as they have a lot going for them. The girl is in regular lessons with a big name trainer, too, and had been able to come out and look at Magic once or twice before. However, she told me that she would still like to come look at where I would be keeping Magic, and wants to see me ride her again. So I am still be in the running. The owner is coming to look at the place where I would board Magic on Saturday, and I am going to look at her again Sunday. Comments and conformation critiques are welcome!

I was wondering if you were the Christie who was looking at her! I've known Shanthi for quite awhile (14 years online, 4 or 5 in person) and I've seen Magic from when she came off the track to recently every 6 months or so. So I can fill you in on the entire story of Magic and Shanthi if you'd like ;). You're definitely #1 on Shanthi's list, Becca is apparently a bigger fan of the teenager but Shanthi really wants you to work out.
My general, overall opinion of her is that she's a nice enough mare, who will likely never be a top-level anything, but that she'd probably do fine at a local/regional level with a soft, quiet rider. I rode her once and if you're quiet and relaxed she's quiet and relaxed. But if she's annoyed she will buck (I actually got off while warming up because she was bucking every time a horsefly landed on her. After Shanthi warmed her up and Magic stopped bucking I got back on ;)).
Christie, I've given Andrea your email address so you all can chat more about Magic. :)
I'm glad you updated - I'd been wondering what was going on with Deuce (and you!) so while I appreciate the update, I'm sorry to hear that he's still sore. Would barefoot not work for him? Also from a purely nerdy point of view, can we have pictures of this back asymmetry? I'd kinda like to see what it looks like!
Magic looks super!! Keep us updated. :)
Wow! It really is a small world, huh? Yes, I would love info... I REALLY got the feeling that Becca was more for the teenager, but I couldn't really read Shanthi.
I was surprised at how much I liked Magic when I rode her. I have no upper level ambitions, and would be really glad to get a nice horse that I can just have fun on, and maybe do some local showing for fun. I might like to do some novice level eventing, currently I don't think I would even want to do training level. I enjoy dressage, too, and things like hunter paces.
Shanthi did say that she would buck if there was a horsefly! Does she really go ballistic?
I'll email you tonight once I get home. :) She wasn't bucking hard, I wasn't in a whole lot of danger of coming off when I was facing forward, but she kept bucking when I twisted around to swat it so it wasn't really working for either of us (but probably was great for the horsefly who didn't care at all). I probably actually still have those pictures on my computer somewhere, I'll look for them tonight before I email you. :)
Thanks Kate! I was just thinking of contacting you to ask if you would do that! :)
When I was writing up the post about Deuce, I was wishing I had a picture! I will get one ASAP and post it.
Deuce currently is barefoot. It would have been hard to get shoes on him, as the farrier even had difficulty trimming him! Deuce couldn't tolerate putting his hoof on the hoof stand to even have it rasped. The farrier suggested sedating Deuce to shoe him, but that would add its own difficulty. Without a firm diagnosis to know if the support of shoes would really help him, we didn't see a need to put the shoes on him right now. Fortunately Deuce has pretty good feet.
Andrea, I look forward to hearing from you! ...and it goes without saying that I would love more pictures, doesn't it? :)
Sorry to hear about Deuce :(
Magic sounds great! Nice looking horse.
I havent looked on COTH in forever, I need to get up to date with my reading
