Yep - we finally got to try something new! I have never actually attempted a shoulder in, until my lesson on Saturday!
The ponies have been in since it started raining, so when I got on I immediately regretted not lunging the nutcase. To top it off, my barn owner's family was there watching. I thought it would be a great time to get dumped and scare the crap out of the four year old : ) At least there would be people there to scrape me off the ground! Anyway, I just went straight to business with a forward trot to focus his squirrelly butt. Amazingly, after a few hairy eyeballs towards the barrels, poles, door, etc etc etc, he settled down.
We got some really nice stretchy trot going, moved on to an equally nice canter, and then came back to the sitting trot. She had me make a small circle at the end and then push him out to a bigger circle and bigger trot and continue the 'circle' straight down the long side - to attempt a shoulder in. The first few attempts resulted in a crappy leg yield...finally, it dawned on me that I was pointing my hips towards the inside and opening the door for Skate to sneak out. Once I understood that I had to be sitting straight and just asking for him to bend around my leg, we got it! My instructor said she didn't think we'd actually get it so soon...but we actually did and it was pretty good! Sweet.
Anyway, I turned in my entry for the TTC show this weekend - Intro B and TL 1. I need someone to call the tests, though! Yikes...

OK first of all you SUCK for being able to ride in all this nasty weather! ;)
If I wasn't showing this weekend I would be happy to call the test for you. Let me know when your next one is.
Oooh! Good job on the shoulder-in!
I also second the "you suck" notion, but hopefully the rain will stop soon and it will be warm enough that I can use the ring tomorrow. If nothing else I can attempt to teach Pro to WALK on the lunge-line?
I'm QUITE jealous of your covered arena...
Good job on the shoulder-in! I remember struggling with it as a teenager, always muddling between four-tracks/leg-yield, not quite it, overbent, counterbent, ugh. It's a tricky one!
Good luck this weekend! PICTURES!
Congrats on the shoulder-in! It is not something I've had much success with in the past, just as Kate was describing.
Good luck at the show!
That sounds like a GREAT ride! Congratulations on the shoulder-in!
My hunter/jumper friend/instructor is taking a bunch of her students to this show again, and wants me to come with Jay. I will probably come...we need to find each other!
Oooo, I forgot to add that my husband and I treated ourselves to a camcorder this week! I just need to get it out of the box and ready to go. (Actually HE will need to learn to work it.) We chose it because we can use it to video, and then pull stills off of that. I don't see why we couldn't video you and Skate, too! (Now the pressure is ON, as I know ALL of you will want pics/video!) ;)
Cool! Can't wait to meet you Christie...I'll be driving a green Titan pulling a White w/ Blue stripes 2H BP.
I'll keep my eyes out for you and Jay.
My ride times are 10:59 and 2:13. Long day in the dressage ring!
Cool! I will be in a red Ford F-350 with a white with black/silver stripe Gore 3H bumper pull. I look forward to meeting you! Did you get my PM the other day?
I may be bringing Deuce, too.
Christie - I did get your PM, I've just been an ass about calling! Whoops...
Well, technically that makes me one also! ;)
