First Trail Ride

I wish I had gotten pictures of Andy and I this weekend but I was out with a consignment horse and a student. The pictures I did get were of them with my cell phone. I was pretty impressed with the pictures my camera did take though.

I didn't realize that I haven't taken Andy on a trail ride before until we were getting ready to leave the property. Andy did exactly what I expected him to do. Ride true, straight, and spook in place at the DUMBEST things. HAHA It was a lot of fun and entertaining.

We cut across the road in front of the barn and went through a large field. This put us into a neighborhood and we went exploring down some of the roads that aren't developed yet. Andy spooked at one of the curbs....it looked like all the other curbs we had gone past but he decided to flinch really hard and snort. Jyll and I laughed and kept going.

Down one of the wooded roads he spooked at a log, we kept going. He got a little crooked here and we took the time to fix it. We went through another field, down beside the busy road( WAY off on the side), and then through another neighborhood. There is a lot of construction so we were careful where we stepped and in one place the ground wasn't packed and poor Andy sunk about 1' and he didn't flinch...just pulled right out of it.

We went down through another neighborhood(don't have ANY wooded trails around) and then through another 20 acre field. I would have LOVED to have gone out and loped circles but didn't want to leave the student standing on the horse she didn't know that well. I do plan on going back though!

I realized what a bad mom I was when we went to cross the road to head back to the barn. This is the first horse I have ever had with sliders on and when we stepped out onto the road his hind foot stepped on the paint, which is a little more slick, and his foot slid, not much and he didn't seem concerned but I realized how bad it could be.

I need to do some research but I'm wondering if I should trail ride him at all.....is it extra dangerous? Is it harder on him? Is it fair??

Glad he was such a good boy for you :). It sounds like a fun ride, but I bet you were wishing for shade towards the end there. It felt like summer this weekend instead of not-quite-May.

I'm glad Andy lived up to your expectations! They always spook at the stupidest things. Let us know how he is when you're able to get back out there and canter some! He really seems like a good find. :)

Sounds like a fun trail ride! I'm glad Andy did so well on his first ride off the property with you.

As for trail riding with the sliders, I have no idea. Lots of good questions for the farrier, maybe.

Glad it went so well! Andy sounds like such a good match for you!

I don't think you are a bad horse Mom! The fact that you are concerned about being a bad one proves you are a good one, LOL. *I* would think it would be OK to trail ride him if you don't ride on pavement a lot and keep it to the absolute minimum, but I am not an expert especially with sliders. I think it would help make him a more rounded horse for you, though.
