Well, Here I Am!

At the urging of you wonderful NCHN folks, here I am on the motivation blog! I don't have a ride to report on yet, and no pretty photos, so I thought I'd start by just introducing myself. I'm Libby, a Maryland native working on my PhD at Duke. I've been riding for 18 years, in mostly balance seat settings but with some hunters and dressage thrown in. However, for over 3 years now I've been out of lessons, out of competition, and in "hitchhiking mode". I have had the good fortune of knowing many generous horse owners (most recently, Lori from NCHN) who have kept me in the saddle. But I'm starting to feel rustier and rustier, which has really compromised my motivation even though I still love to ride. Given the way my schedule looks for the next few months, I'll probably keep hitchhiking for now, but I'm hoping that before too long I'll find a lesson situation that will help me get back on track. Ok, thanks for listening, and I'll try to have a ride to discuss next time!

Welcome to the blog, Libby. :) It's great that you've got people who're helping you hitchhike while you motivate yourself for lessons. I had a hard time finding a lesson situation I was happy with, but hopefully you'll have better luck!

welcome! What part of maryland are you from (and where did you ride up here?)?

Thanks Andrea! I am really grateful to the people who have kept me in the saddle during this weird limbo period :) I should mention that in addition to lesson programs, I'm also hoping to look for half-lease situations -- the fit is more important to me than the format!

Hi Hannah -- I grew up in Silver Spring. Over the years, I rode all over the place: Woodland Horse Center and Potomac Glen Riding School (Montgomery County), A Moment in Time Farm (Southern MD), and Clayton Ridge (Harford County).

Welcome to the Blog! Glad you decided to join us. Do you have a "main" horse that you ride of Lori's or do you get to ride a bunch of different ones? Being out of lessons can be hard but if you are getting to ride a lot of different types of horses then look at it as a GREAT learning opportunity.

Welcome! I took 7 years off from regular riding while I was in college/poor. It took a toll on my skills, but no more than general old age did!

I found that people popped up all over the place with horses to ride - some even paid!

Welcome! I, too, am glad that you are able to find rides. It is good that you are able to find ways to stay in the saddle. Try not to get discouraged! I look forward to your updates, and hope you can find the perfect situation!

That is a neat horse in your profile picture, is that one you currently get to ride? I used to have a big buckskin Paint.

Welcome, Libby! I grew up (well, spent jr/high school years) in Rockville, where my parents still live.

Christie -- nope, that photo was taken at an IHSA Regionals show in 2005, at Goucher College. Aladdin was so cute, I bet your buckskin paint was too. Lately I've been riding a gorgeous tobiano/Hanoverian named Tango. I'll post pictures of him eventually :)

Welcome, Libby!!! We're always welcoming to fellow grad students on this blog. :)

I "hitchiked" for my whole riding career until Pro, so I definitely know what it's like. I actually think it provides a really unique learning experience that you just can't get from owning your own horse, so we're excited to hear about your progress!
