Maybe I should title it "Mary's INCREDIBLY out of shape!!" Or "We got Sidepass!!" or "We Rode in a Rope Halter!" because technically all of it would be true.
I rode in a rope halter yesterday bareback. He was good, but we didn't do anything extraordinary because....well, I'm out of shape!! Like, I was getting on and I accidentally kicked my poor horse! I just couldn't get my leg up high enough to clear his rump and he took off trotting after I kicked him!! I felt soooo bad!! (I almost fell off too because of it, but thankfully I didn't!)
Anyway, we did some jumbled poles too. Pepsi apparently is no longer coordinated though, (despite his MANY snort, spin and bolt routines in the past to prove otherwise!) because he stepped on the poles EVERY time I took him over them! I mean, really horse. I can watch you buck, rear, turn on a dime to miss a kick from another horse and then gallop off after them in the pasture, but you can't WALK over 3 poles?!? (rolls eyes)
I did ride for a long time (maybe 20 minutes?) but we did a LOT of groundwork before and after the ride. And I FINALLY got a REAL sidepass! It was only one step, but that's all I asked for anyway! I'm slowly starting to figure out my body language with him when asking for that, so I'm sure it will only get better.
I can tell he's a little sore too right now so I'm going to wait on his boots to get here before I take him on any long trail rides. I don't think it's fair to ask him to work hard through pain, so we'll just stick to the real basic stuff for now until the Renegades get here.
Oh, and Alex- I don't know HOW you ride in a rope halter so much! It felt like everytime I asked him for ANYTHING he either couldn't understand what I was asking for or he WAY over-responded. A simple, move off my leg 4 inches became move off the rail 4 feet! So, obviously I haven't figured out the fine line when using the rope halter for riding.
A friend is coming out tomorrow to take pictures of his feet. I'm hoping (crosses fingers) that she'll get on him for me for a few minutes so I can see how he's moving. It's hard to see how your horse goes from the saddle! :P

I like the last two titles! But it's hot, so we all feel crazily out of shape. :)
Yayyy jumbled poles. Pro can empathize with stepping on them, for sure. Maybe with some more practice he can get better again?
Yay on the sidepass!!!!
YAY! It sounds like things are really going well! I can REALLY empathize with the being out of shape, too! Ick! The last time I rode Deuce bareback I clumsily bumped him on the rump getting on, too. He just stood there, though. It was actually more clumsiness that day than being out of shape, because I mount from fiberglass "house" trailer steps when I ride where I have him boarded. I got them for only $40, and they get you high enough to mount without stressing the horse's back at all. They just aren't very portable, LOL!
I'm glad you got the sidepass and are figuring that out, too! :)
Sounds like he is getting better and better. yea for the sidepass!!!
Are we all really posting this late? All of us have posted after midnight!
