Tess's New Shoes 7/15/08

Well the big TB mare got a few new things today. She got a name...Tess and she got front shoes. I am all for letting them be barefoot if they can be but this girl was SORE. She has typical TB flat and flaky feet.

My farrier is wonderful and had her and everyone else done by the time I got to the farm. He said that she stood really quiet but that her feet hadn't had much care in a long time and he hoped the shoes would help.

I had to teach a lesson last night so I hopped on Tess while I taught. Tess was GREAT. We only walked because she is still a little tender at the trot. She was responsive to voice cues. We worked on moving her hindquarters over, shoulders over, opening her shoulders, stopping with my seat, and we also did a few steps backing. This mare is SMART. She didnt' get upset or worried even when she wasn't sure of the command. She just thought it all out.

We walked for about 1hr and then I put her up and put some hoof grease on her feet. I don't think it will help but it make me feel like I am doing something. I think I will soak her front feet for the next day or so to see if that helps.

That's a good name! I hope she feels better soon with the shoes. Rather than soaking, have you ever done poultice on the soles with diapers and duct tape to hold it in place? I find that it works GREAT. It helps with the soreness without softening the hoof so much, so it's especially good for typical TB feet.

I told my husband about her old name and he thought it was a terrible name too! Tess is a cute name.

It sounds like she is going to be a great horse.

Awww, LOVE the name!!!! Tess sounds like she must be so grateful to be with you. If nothing else than for the renaming. ;) What a sweetheart!
